Resident Evil 5 Exclusive Interview
GameGrep

We sat down with Capcom’s Product Manager Matt Dahlgren

We would like to thank Matt & the whole team over at High Road Communications for making this happening!

How is the team doing at Capcom with the release of Resident Evil 5 coming so soon?

We are very excited for Friday the 13th which is coming up; everything that has happened with the campaign has been phenomenal, the response from the fans has been great and there has been tons of interest in title and we are really excited to have this game in the hands of consumers very soon, but we are all very tired.

You said a key word there, campaign. With the viral marketing of kujuju which was launched a couple of months ago, the fans response seemed to be positive, then with the release of the demos on PSN and Xbox Marketplace and fans went a bit nuts. Are you happy with the viral campaign and overall marketing the game has received for basically the past year?

We cannot be happier; everything we have done has been received very positively. The demo for one has been astounding. We have achieved over 4 million downloads across Xbox Live and Playstation 3 which really just shattered records in terms of demo downloads go and the viral videos have been received very positively. In terms of media sites like Gametrailers we have gotten over 20 million views of our media on their site and our fans are hungry for content and we are glad that they are happy with the materials we are putting out.

You say 20 million people on Gametrailers, 4 million people have downloaded the demo, and still there are some players who are not happy with the demo. What do you have to say to those people who are basically basing their opinion of the game on a short demo experience? What do you want to say to those haters on what is happening at Capcom about their concerns.

With a title like Resident Evil 5 which has achieved such a level of buzz that new people are being introduced to the franchise for the first time. People need to realize that we are not just creating a generic first person shooter we are creating a Resident Evil game and Resident Evil has had a very traditional control style for a very long time. Probably the biggest comment by users who played the demo is the lack of ability to move and shoot at the same time and if you look at Resident Evil in the past that has never been an option and we feel that if you added that function that it would make the game too easy and that is not what Resident Evil is all about. Resident Evil is about putting players into very tense circumstances, having them overwhelmed by their surroundings and the enemies who are stalking them and to have them run and find a safe place to beable to take out the enemies one on one. It is a thinking game where you put pressure on the player rather than letting the player just mow down the enemy as they progress through the game.

I agree Resident Evil is a survival horror game. Speaking of the franchise, the last game in the series which was released, Resident Evil 4 was outstanding. Released first on the Gamecube and receiving many awards and the media was praising the game, then eventually PS2 and then the Wii. Is there a chance for Resident Evil 5 getting a port or a RE5 game on the Wii?

I don’t think Resident Evil 5 would transition well onto the Wii. This is our first time moving the franchise onto next generation consoles so this is our Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 debut and a lot of the focus with the developers was pushing that hardware as far as they could possibly take it. Some of our main points in the game are online co-op, absolutely amazing graphics, and the capabilities of the AI and the sheer number of enemies that can be on the screen at the same time. I don’t know if that would be the right fit to bring back over to the Wii. It made a lot of sense for Resident Evil 4 from the Gamecube to the Wii at that point, but right now we are really focusing on the Xbox 360 and PS3 experience.

With that said though we really cherish our fans on the Wii and Capcom supports the Wii and definitely wants to make sure that we are not alienating our fans of the Resident Evil franchise that own Wii’s so I would say to those users that they should pay attention to the near future and there should be some announcements coming their way in the near future that they should be pleased with.

Speaking of fan base, you are releasing a beautiful Xbox 360 bundle next week and we noticed that this is the first bundle Capcom has done. Even with Dead Rising, Lost Planet and more recently Street Fighter IV, so the question is why a RE5 bundle?

Great question and I do not know if I can speak for the other titles because they did not have a bundle but for resident evil 5 we have been working very closely with Microsoft and Microsoft (Xbox 360) is a great platform for the game and their console excels in areas that support our key features very well like our game is very Co-op centered and is a big part of it and Xbox Live is a phenomenal integration tool. And we really felt that this was a prestigious title that has a lot of hype around it and people really want it and we put this together with Microsoft as a treat for the fans something special and I don’t think that should detract from the other great titles that Capcom has its just really great that we can bring this console to the market.

What is going to be in this bundle?

Xbox 360 Elite, exclusive RE5 theme, copy of Street Fighter 2 Super HD, Red Controller and the game.

No plane ticket to Africa?

(laughs) That was brought up in one of our staff meetings but no we couldn’t make it happen.

One of the staff here loves Code Veronica (Fale) and was wondering if we would see a XBLA or PSN release of this game.

Nothing is planned for the game regarding a remake on PSN/XBLA, but what I can say is if you are a fan of Code Veronica you should pay attention in the next couple of weeks there is some news you should be very pleased with. Tell him to pay attention on the 12th (March).

Time To Scrap Paper Manuals?

Time To Scrap Paper Manuals? I can remember many Christmas mornings from my childhood spent excitedly flipping through the pages of a new book. This was unusual because as a young child, books and clothes were the only gifts I would dread receiving. However, the Christmas morning books that excited me so much were something special. Granted, they weren’t literary classics, but back then,...
