Link Between Online Gaming and Violence Killed Off
Ms. Jane Barnett Saves The Face Of Gaming
This is the finding of Miss Jane Barnett and her colleagues at Middlesex University. Their results will be presented at the British Psychological Society’s Annual Conference in Dublin today, Wednesday 2 April 2008.
The psychologists recruited 292 male and female online gamers, playing the game World of Warcraft. The players, aged between 12 and 83 years, were asked to complete a questionnaire on anger, aggression and personality and then played the game for two hours. After this time they were they were asked to complete the test again.
The psychologists found overall the gamers were more likely to feel calm or tired after playing – but there were differences depending on sex, age and personality.
Miss Barnett said: “There were actually higher levels of relaxation before and after playing the game as opposed to experiencing anger but this did very much depend on personality type.
“This will help us to develop a emotion and gaming questionnaire to help distinguish the type of gamer who is likely to transfer their online aggression into everyday life.”

Those people who think gaming makes people violent just makes me want to go and chainsaw them to death and then shoot up a school, rob a McDonalds and sleep with a hooker after to regain my health and vitality.
I am glad someone respectable has come out in favor of games.. heck with out games I would be a mass murderer... or an accountant

This entire news article is off. First of all the title "Link between online gaming and Violence killed off" is entirely misleading. The study didn't 'kill' anything. The study was based on WoW, which is not exactly the type of GTA/Manhunter/Hitman/Postal type of violence that most people are referring to when having a discussion on gaming and violence. It is an illogical leap to assume that playing WoW would cause a person to feel the same way or cause their brain to react in the same way as playing some of the other truely violent games out there. At best the few paragraphs quoted in the story show that some video games can be a relaxing form of entertainment. A far cry from what the title would imply.
Second the story background on the main page shows a guy with his head exploding. Seriously. That had nothing to do with the story, and only exacerbates the misleading title of the article.
While it certainly appears to be an interesting paper and definitely worthy of coverage on a gaming website such as this, it really it simply that - an interesting paper. I would like to encourage the owners/reporters/creators of this website to not exaggerate stories, even in what I assume is a good faith(though misguided) effort to support our gaming cause.
As a side note, we as gamers need to realize that violent games *DO* have an effect on certain segments of the population, namely kids and teenagers. This isn't really up for debate. They've done brain studies showing what happens to the brain when playing games, the changes are rather shocking. Please notice I said 'certain segments of the population'. This mainly does not refer to adults who by and large are not so affected. The problem is is that in this particular discussion those of the 'games are bad' crowd tend to not separate the kids from the adults, while the 'games are good' crowd tend to take offense at *any* suggestion that violent games are bad.
Thanks to Fale for suggesting this site to those of us over at 2old2rpg.

Thanks for your comments!
By the way, the title was "cutted and pasted" from the OFFICIAL Press Release from Middlesex University! So, as a gaming news site, we're reporting exactly what the medias say.
Regards,
Jay

In that case I retract my comment about exaggeration and instead place the blame on the original news outlet that concocted the title. Thank you for the additional information.
I would however suggest that you guys change the backgroung on the story to one that reflects the true nature of the article, something WoW related maybe.

Then it is of extreme importance for you to report and educate, not falsely imply. Be honest, truthful and unbiased with your readers.
