Igor: The Game

By Brian Edey (Falelorn)

IGOR is an animated movie which was actually pretty good, and of course the required video game has now been released to the gaming public. Borrowing gameplay concepts from various other titles and mixing the concepts together just like IGOR mixes body parts to create his own various monsters. But does this game follow the same path as other movie games and fail to impress or does it break the mold and give us gamers something new and improved? No there is nothing at all.

Gameplay

A game is the made up of the sum of it’s parts and in the case of IGOR The Game, it’s parts include a dash of “Super Puzzle Fighter”, a pinch of “Puzzle Quest” and a smidge of “the collecting game”. Super Puzzle Fighter and Puzzle Quest are both great titles, and so many games use collecting you must think “Hey, I can not go wrong with this game!!” well you would be wrong, it will only appeal to a certain group of gamers. In this case, that would be the most forgiving gamers.

IGOR’s gameplay basics are fairly simple, you start out the game by building your own monster creation from various body parts located at the local “recycle plant”, then you head off in search of your girl Eva. Other than that the game is short on story and very short on telling you where to go, but you can head off by traveling across Malaria, yes that is the name of the world. As you travel the world you will be randomly attacked by monsters created by other evil scientists, who will battle your creation in an all out mixed martial art fight, well if Frankenstein’s monster had a good ground game.

Multiple colored blocks will fall down the screen and you will create larger blocks of four or more, once these are created you will have the ability to attack with fist or foot and do damage. Slowly dropping their health until you win or lose the fight and in the end that is the extent of the combat side to the game which is a shame because while the game is probably made or the younger crowd, I doubt it will appeal to them at all.

Graphics & Audio

The graphics and audio are overly limited just like the rest of the actual game. What 3D graphics are in the game are of a low quality we rarely see any more in Nintendo DS games, the sprites are poorly animated and drawn and just overall the graphics are disappointing on every level. Audio wise here is no voice acting at all, even from the actual movie and since it was made for kids even a little licensed voice over work would have been appreciated. The music is very limited, but out of all the audio it is very well done and fits the game well even though there is little variety through out the game.

Value

With almost no or very little actual replay value in the actual game, the average multiplayer does add a few more hours of fun but in the end the game is not a worthy title.

Bottom Line

The game is nothing more than a video game based on a few interesting concepts from other noteworthy games and it does nothing more then slightly amuse the player for a couple of hours at most. Rent it or stay away from it. Not worth buying.

Pros

+ Simple controls
+ Some fun can be had

Cons

- Not very fun mixture of concepts
- Awkward gameplay and it gets boring fast
- Graphically the game is subpar
- Music fits but it is very limited
- Bad concept which just never comes together

Cash On Demand

Cash On Demand I’ve always been an advocate for cheap and easy...Er...when it comes to gaming, that is. Unfortunately, it’s because of this that I’ve missed out on some of the bigger titles over the past few years. (CoD4, anyone?). Buying used games, ordering online from sites like Amazon or Ebay, is a simple way to avoid high pricing, (at least until you factor in...
