Fast cars? Check. Rocket Boosters? Check. Cool arenas with plenty of ways to blow up? Check. Kick ass multiplayer? Check check. So what are we missing? Oh how about the ability to save and record our matches, edit our videos to make our “pwnage” look even more amazing and post it on Youtube for Grandma to see? Check! As you can see not much is missing from this new crazy, ass on fire, bat out of hell action racing game from Psyonix, a game company you may not have heard of but you have certainly heard of or played some of the games they have worked on including Gears of War and the Unreal Tournament series.
I have to think that whomever at Psyonix who thought up the idea of this game is crazy because it is one of those simple brilliant games which people should be playing 8 years from now on their Playstation 5 in full Virtual Reality mode. This is a game which pulled me away from playing many big named titles like F.E.A.R. 2 and Dawn of War 2 because I just had to beat the next level or beat one of the evil artificial intelligent controlled devil cars who ram me to oblivion over and over again. As impressive as this game is and how ever much I rave about it, it is not perfect, but it is fantastic, so read on and after wards load up the PSN store and buy this game.
Gameplay
The gameplay is the best part Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars with the fluid actions is you can quickly boost your way and score points after just a few minutes of playing the game. There is a very well done tutorial which walks you through the basic to advanced driving techniques and these tutorials are needed especially when you play against the very smart AI or human players.
Over the top physics and rocket boosters make your cars perform some wild and crazy stunts, you can even control your car in mid flight with some skill, drive up walls and onto the roof (very limited, but fun and if you know what your doing can help you score points) or what is most fun, ramming the other team so they explode into little pieces, very gratifying and yes I will admit I had a gleeful laugh as I destroyed several peoples cars. DESTRUCTION IS GOOD.
Multiplayer is a wild ride and online is fairly stable after the last patch which did fix a few small issues. But what makes the multiplayer so fun is recording your match and viewing what insane things you and your team did to win or lose the match. After saving the video you can export it to the XMB (Cross Media Bar) so you can copy the file and edit it in your favorite video editing software or export it to YOUTUBE of all places. How great is that?! Pretty damn great and it adds to the fun and excitement of what is my favorite multiplayer game on the PSN and yes that includes store bought games and downloadable games so see game developers bigger does not mean better.
Graphics and Audio
Graphically the game is good for a downloadable PSN game, but do not expect the game to push your PS3 to its limits or even wake it up as Supersonic looks closer to a PS2 game running on a PS3 (i.e. – High Resolution) than a true PS3 title. But it runs at a high and constant frame rate and after a few minutes you will not even care about the graphics just how amazing the game plays.
Audio wise the game is good but nothing overly impressive as the music is fairly standard, the sound effects are good but nothing spectacular and just like the graphics, the audio means very little once you sit down and are playing with friends.
Value
The value of the game can be high and worthwhile if your friends own it or they will come over and play with you on a constant basis. This is a great party “drinking game” and a fun game you could play with the family. Creating videos to humiliate your friends and impress your dog is a great idea and more games need this feature.
Bottom Line
If you have friends who own this game then run out and buy it as honestly there really is no more enjoyable multiplayer experience on the PSN at this time (Killzone 2 is coming and that might be more popular for a while in my house). The single player side of things is fun, but it only has so much enjoyment as the game was obviously built to be a multiplayer fun fest of rocket powered proportions.
+Not bad graphics and audio
+Very fun and addictive gameplay
+Multiplayer rocks
+Easy to pick up but difficult to master
+Record multiplayer matches, edit, upload to Youtube… BRILLIANT.
Cons
-It is just mini games and nothing but mini-games with very little variety
-Too costly for just a single player to enjoy, but if your friends have the game it’s great and worthwhile to own

I’ve always been an advocate for cheap and easy...Er...when it comes to gaming, that is. Unfortunately, it’s because of this that I’ve missed out on some of the bigger titles over the past few years. (CoD4, anyone?). Buying used games, ordering online from sites like Amazon or Ebay, is a simple way to avoid high pricing, (at least until you factor in...
