While the Playstation Vita sounds like a hardcore gamer’s dream handheld, a lot of gamers, analysts and observers seem to think that the system is doomed to fail as it faces ferocious competition from Nintendo and the growing smartphone games market. While we’ll leave the debate for another day, here are the top 5 announced retail games for the PS Vita that we think sound the most promising for this year.

5- MLB 12: The Show - March 6, 2012

Almost unanimously considered the best baseball simulation series, MLB 12: The Show will have a simultaneous release on both the PS3 and the Vita. While it isn’t an exclusive for the handheld, its importance cannot be denied. Sports games are extremely popular and while the competition may be strong on home consoles, the situation is different on handhelds as FIFA Vita will be the only other strong competitor for the title at this time. Assuming that the series’ trend continues, MLB 12: The Show could definitely prove to be a heavy hitter for the Vita.

4- Resistance: Burning Skies - May 29, 2012

While the Resistance series is not the most popular FPS franchise in the gaming world, it certainly has its audience. The Vita’s scarce library and the fact that this will be the first actual first person shooter to be available on the system could prove to be a winning combination for this one. Featuring proper console-style controls thanks to the Vita’s duo of analog sticks, a full set of online multiplayer features, great graphics and a unique storyline to boot, developer Nihilistic’s first take on the franchise just might prove to be the second big first-party exclusive the Vita will offer.

3- LittleBigPlanet - June 26, 2012

A Playstation platform without a LittleBigPlanet title? Sony wouldn’t dare let that happen. This time around, Sackboy comes back for a new portable entry this time handled by series’ main developer Media Molecule. While it does carry the same title as the original PS3 title, it offers a lot more than any previous installment. Not only is it compatible with all previous content from the 2 PS3 games, but it also offers a brand new single player mode, new customization options and new gameplay features utilizing the Vita’s unique capabilities. Sounds promising? We think so.

2- Gravity Rush - June 12, 2012

Now this one’s very promising. Having been released in Japan under the name Gravity Daze, this unique platformer from the mind of Silent Hill’s father is set to become a must-play title of 2012. Everything about the game is entirely unique. The combat system is original, the art style is mesmerizing and the gameplay, according to many reports, is some of the most satisfying we’ll see in a long time on any system, let alone the Vita.

1- Call of Duty Vita - Q4 2012

Love it or hate it - Call of Duty is the video game industry’s biggest franchise. At this time, we don’t know much about what this new Call of Duty title will offer. It could be a completely new experience or a simple port of the home consoles version. Either way, though, it will most certainly be the first proper Call of Duty experience you will be able to have on the go and for the millions of addicted gamers across the globe, this could mean something huge.

Here they are, our top 5 most promising announced games for the PS Vita in 2012. Do you agree, disagree or simply want to chime in? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Will more be added to the list come March 9 when Sony will hold a conference to announce more Vita titles? Check back soon and find out!

Hardware Talk: Pritect Sensor Cover (Kinect)

I watched the conspiracy theorists start buzzing when Kinect was first revealed. An ‘always on’ camera situated within your house that could potentially be used to pull data from its oblivious owners is not a comforting thought. While it isn’t being openly used for anything like... More >>

DLC Talk: Epic Quest (XBLA, SEN, iOS, Android)

Okay, I know what you are thinking. Here we go again, singing the praises of yet another Zen table that still essentially boils down to the same old kick, only re-skinned with some kind of iconic theme. In some respects, I wouldn’t fault you for that assumption, although I do find each of... More >>

GamerDad Issue 12: Happy Action Theater

Given the sudden announcement of the game not long before launch, I actually didn’t know a lot about Happy Action Theater leading up to its release. And even though I had a rough idea, after actually sitting down with it (relatively speaking, as it’s a Kinect title), I don’t... More >>
