GameFocus Takes A Look At The Wii Mini

Here we are! The Wii Mini is set to arrive to Canadian stores in just a few days, but here at GameFocus, we thought it would be a good idea to bring you a closer look before the big day.

The first thing you’ll notice when you unbox your brand new Wii Mini is that it’s not that much smaller than the original system. Sure, the classic Wii is a tiny bit bigger than its new little companion, but the Wii mini also comes with less features. Much like the revised Wii model which came out last year, no Gamecube compatibility is included with this system. That means you won’t even be able to plug in your old GC controller to play Wii games that support it, such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl or Mario Kart Wii. Another thing worth noting is that the new console does not include Internet connectivity, making it impossible to access features such as the Wii store, Virtual Console, WiiConnect24, or even online gameplay in games that support it. The other, more minor omission, is that the new console only has one USB port in the back, rather than the two present on the classic console.

In terms of design, you can probably tell from the pictures that this is a complete overhaul. The red and black colors are complimented by the more retro style. In fact, the console takes elements from a variety of previous Nintendo systems. Tee top loader disc compartment instantly reminded us of the Gamecube, and the overall shape and feel of it are very reminiscent of the Super Nintendo, complete with thick, strong plastic and the angular footprint of the system. One of the system’s low points in terms of design is that the front of it doesn’t look all that great given its lack of a proper "facade".

With its catalog composed of over 1,400 games, the Wii mini does have some market appeal for collectors and casual gamers alike. However, considering how it’s possible to buy the classic system for $129.99, complete with a brand new game and all of the features missing from the mini version, it’s hard for us to recommend this system at this price of $99. However, if you dig the design and don’t mind the stripped down set of features, go for it! It’s a Canadian exclusive that is likely to be pretty rare in just a couple of years.

Here we are. The next generation of consoles is among us and it is finally time to start thinking about finally unplugging our beloved current-gen systems. Could there be a better swan song for one of these systems than taking a trip back to Rapture?

Summer Gaming Guide: What to Play

Summer Gaming Guide: What to Play

Whether it’s a rainy day, a sickness, or some other reason not to go outside and enjoy the beautiful summer air, video games are the perfect way to spend your time - that is, if you can find a game to play. In terms of releases, summer generally isn’t the most fruitful of seasons, and this year is no different. So what games could/should you be sinking your teeth into during the dog days?

The Last Guardian Will NOT Appear at #E32015 and Here's the Reason Why...

Since its reveal at E3 2009, The Last Guardian has not resurfaced other than in rumours and in statements regarding said rumours. Sony admits to major studio problems during the game’s development, but constantly reassures those anticipating the game that it is still not, and will not, be canceled. So is this the year that we finally see the resurrection of The Last Guardian? In my opinion, the answer is a big fat NO.

A Few Good Reasons for Grounding Players in WOW

A Few Good Reasons for Grounding Players in WOW

Getting my first mount in World of Warcraft was a major milestone. It came at a time before Blizzard reduced the cost of training for a ground mount and the gold required seemed like an impossible sum when quests were doling out a few coppers. What's more, I was foolishly selling my gathered iron or mithril to in-game vendors rather than placing it up for auction. I won't get into the particulars of my moneymaking strategy but I will say that it wasn't effective and very indicative of my n00b status.
