(XBLA) Wolf of the Battlefield: Commandos 3 Review
Wolf of the Battlefield: Commandos 3
Short but sweet
Posted 4 years ago By - Brian Edey
If you are old enough to remember the original game Commando from 1985, wolf of the Battlefield Commando’s 3 will be instantly recognizable in terms of its similar gameplay. The run and gun gameplay made famous in the 1980’s still works well today on our next generation consoles and computers, three hundred and sixty degree running and gunning with a variety of weapons and vehicles is still the same style of game we have seen over the last 20 plus years.
Wolf of the Battlefield is an action game where you and your friends take the role of one of three commandos’s who are sent on a mission to destroy the evil tyrant General Ratiev. During this mission you will free Prisoners of War, use tanks and jeeps, and a variety of weapons as you run and gun your way through levels ranging from a swamp, prison and a fortress until you finally face the General.

Gameplay
The gameplay is very sweet and simple, thumb sticks control movement and the direction you fire with triggers launching grenades. Using the very tried and true formula of spray and pray the game never deviates from that direction, even during the short vehicle sections. Blowing up boxes, picking up different weapons from machine guns to rocket launchers and finding power ups then releasing the odd P.O.W. and blowing up everything around you is all you actually do.
If the game had more for the single player it would be more fun, but the real value in the title is the Co-Op action blasting everything with your friends online and on your couch. The other failing aspect to the fun factor is how short the game is, if there were more levels I would be very happy with it, but it is very short and a game you can blow through in record time.

Graphics and Audio
Following a cartoonish cel-shaded style similar to Rocketmen Axis of Evil, Commando’s 3 graphics are well done. Every character, vehicle, tree, explosion and building looks very well done and fit with each other and nothing appears out of place. The water looks good, but not as good as we have seen in other titles, but overall it could be much worse.
The in game effects are excellent, explosions and slight weather and environment effects are great, but my real only graphic gripe are the weapon effects and not the actual weapons, but the look they have when they are shot. They all seem very generic and something we have seen several times before and that is a shame since all we do is shoot all of the time.
Impressive and classic arcade audio in Commando’s 3 and while the audio has that old school sound, they are high quality and new in every way. Some actual voice over work would be nice in the game, but in the end for music and sound effects the audio is very well done.

Value
Three playable characters and plenty of secrets to find make this short game worthy of replaying, especially for multiplayer Co-Op games. You will beat it over and over again and it is one of those nice mindless shooters that just never get’s old.
Bottom Line
Even though the game is short, it is worth picking up at 800 MS points or 10 dollars if you will be playing it with friends, for solo play it is more of a judgment call, but I would have to say pass unless you are a fan of the genre. It is very similar in gameplay to Rocketmen, but much better, fun and a great game.
