Wii-ware games have been hit and miss in terms of quality and due to the harsh fact there are no demos to try before you buy you can easily waste money, but sometimes we get a wicked game that shocks and surprises us. Helix is one of those titles that shocks and surprises us due to its simple gameplay that hits the gaming bulls-eye. By far the shortest review I have ever done and for a game I really enjoy and I recommend to every Wii owner.

I will mention that Helix is a game where you should have two Wii-motes and while it works with one controller very well if you want to play the game as it was designed you should have two Wii-motes. But I am wondering why they did not think of using the Nun-chuck since not everyone will have two Wii-motes. But besides that, I would say Helix makes one fantastic rhythm game at a fantastic price.

Gameplay
The gameplay of Helix could not be any easier to pick up; by using one or two Wii-motes you mimic the actions of a robot character on the screen as a series of bars moves across the very top of the screen. It is very simple, very easy to pick up and if you need help there is a tutorial which can walk you through the entire process and get you shaking your Wii-motes around.

Three difficulty levels will allow you to perfect your Wii-mote waggle and then challenge you later on as you learn how to play the game. The easy difficulty is extremely easy to play and fun once you get the controls down, but if you want to feel the burn in your arms try medium and hard and you will notice your arms starting to burn quickly if you are out of shape, so it is not for the weak of heart.

There is basically a two player ‘Co-op’ mode with the game if each player operates one arm each and to some it might sound boring, if they are playing only half a game, but actually it becomes fun and rather competitive on higher difficulty levels to keep up with each other.

Graphics
Graphically the game could not be simpler and it is the pure simplicity of the graphics that work and make the game has this charm to them not seen in a rhythm game since Boom! Boom! Rocket. The lead character (if you can call him that) is nothing more then a robot made up of several basic shapes such as ovals. The back ground is a simple burst of colors very similar to what we have seen in media players like the ones we have seen packaged with Windows.

Other then that the rest of the graphics are extremely simple, well designed and they work so well you can quickly see what you need to when you need it and move on. Could the graphics be better? Yes, even on the Wii they could be better, but as a downloadable game they work and that is what is important.

Audio
Audio wise the only real audio in the game is music and the music is excellent, with some Euro Techno music which is appealing and not limited to the over used Rock tracks we have been over exposed to from the Rock Band and Guitar Hero series of games. This is music you would most likely hear at a rave or a dance club then your bar or party, so at least for me it was fresh and welcome.

Value
The game has a ton of real value because there are plenty of songs to unlock, difficulty levels and the price is so low it makes it worth while to pick up even as an impulse purchase.

Bottom Line
I was blown away by the unique gameplay and simple concept behind the game, which makes this one of the best Wii and downloadable games this year. If you enjoy rhythm games this one will be one of your favorites.

Pros
- Very fun
- Unique way to play a rhythm game
- Music is fantastic and catchy
Cons
- Graphics could be better
- You need 2 Wii-motes to get the most out of the game, why can’t you use the Nunchuk?

Score
8.5 / 10
