The music rhythm game has been around for a very long time and we have played them by dancing on mats, guitars, singing in to a microphone and even moving a mouse around, but in the end they are similar in basically the same way hitting the right point and the right time to get the best score. While Groovin’ Blocks is basically the same as all of these it is a bit different with the game being a cross between Dr. Mario or even Tetris and any other music rhythm game you can imagine.

What is most surprising about this game is how it takes such simple concepts and makes them their own and have them work in a perfect mesh of puzzle and musical rhythm. The biggest question you will have to ask and we hope to answer it in this review, is “Do you need another music rhythm game?”

The answer of course is, Yes you do.

Gameplay

Gameplay wise Groovin’ Blocks is straight forward, you drop down blocks (their shape depends on the songs difficulty) and you make lines of three or more blocks which will then disappear, much like Tetris. As the lines disappear, blocks will fall and you can actually cause a major chain reaction of blocks and you may end up clearing the game board.

Being a music rhythm game, there is more then just dropping blocks and making lines and the rhythm aspect to the game is to drop the blocks in tune with the beat of the music. As you drop the blocks to the beat of the music a score modifier increases, which helps your score which is very important to open up more songs and power ups. The power ups are very important because they can do many important things such as blowing up small sections of the board, a score boost and more. Using the power ups can literally change a losing game to a record setting score in the blink of an eye.

Guess what? Groovin’ Blocks has some great multiplayer gaming for you to enjoy, with both Co-op and Head to Head. Head to Head is the most fun multiplayer I have had since it was fun to laugh at the overall experience when the other person made a major mistake. Co-op is fun as well with the players splitting controlling blocks on the same board, but when I played with someone who was not that good, and it did get very annoying when they kept making mistakes that ended the game very quick. But Co-op is very fun when both players are of similar skill and are working in a groove together, that is when the fun begins.

My biggest gripe and really the only gripe gameplay wise is that the on screen markers for when you should drop your blocks are small and move fast so it makes it difficult to hit the mark and run up your score modifier. This could be fixed in a patch and hopefully they will because if this was fixed the gameplay would be near perfect.

Graphics

Simple graphics and a very nice menu system with a great user interface round out the well designed graphics of Groovin’ Blocks. The design is so well done in game that the simple backgrounds and moving blocks never distract you from the overall gameplay, but are still done well enough they have this semi-futuristic glow about them, similar to a few other games we have seen in the last couple of years. Using lines and blocks for the majority of the in game graphics this ‘Tetris with Rhythm’ game has a look all of its own.

Audio

A music rhythm game needs to have some good music and while this music is far from your standard music that you would normally hear in a rhythm game (such as Helix, Rock Band, etc) it is very well done, almost a techno popish type of music which suits the gameplay. The games sound effects are also very well done and just simple enough not to be annoying or trying to be something they are not.

The audio also pays some homage to gamers in the music, with such songs as ‘I love my C-64’ which is a nice touch and part of the well done audio experience in Groovin’ Blocks. More music would have been nice, but for the actual cost of the game you do get plenty of booms for your buck.

Value

For such a low cost game, this one comes with a ton of replay value and is well worth your gaming dollar. The multiplayer is fun, especially Head to Head, the single player is fun and in the end that is all that matters.

Bottom Line

Buy this game, it completely rocks and I can’t stop playing it, help me! This is my favorite rhythm game since Rock Band and that is saying a lot since this game is a downloadable Wii-Ware game.

Pros
* Nice easy and addictive gameplay
* Graphics are kind of cool
* Music is very good
* Did I mention it’s addictive?
* Use of Wii-mote (sideways) or classic controller for gameplay
* Calibrate your controls to your TV if the controls are off
* Co-op and Head to Head are great multiplayer gaming choices
Cons
* The harder difficulty levels are freakishly hard
* It is hard to get your modifier up, at least for me
* No motion controls
* No online
* Large download size, and I mean LARGE
