Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Uprising

Command and Conquer have been the corner stone of Real Time Strategy (RTS) gaming almost since the dawn of gaming on PC’s. The series has almost always been great with only a couple of rare instances of the series missing that special something. When Electronic Arts announced it was bringing back the fun alternative history Command and Conquer Red Alert series fans of the original games were very excited. EA did not let down its fans with Red Alert 3, bringing some new innovations graphically and gameplay wise but keeping with the fun story telling via full motion videos. Soon after the game was in stores it was announced a stand-alone expansion was coming called Uprising. Almost everyone expected this would be just as good as or even better than the original Red Alert 3 but I have to say you will probably be disappointed by the fact this is a weaker version of Red Alert 3 and is missing many features which made the original game so great.

The story for Uprising is decent and had potential with the Russian forces scrambling to regain some power, the Rising Sun are trying to regain some honor after the victorious Allies have basically wiped the floor with everyone. But even the allies have been brought down a peg or two by corruption and inner turmoil. The game consists of four mini-campaigns and the Commanders Challenge but is lacking any sort of link between the mini-campaigns. Still though even with the game lacking so much it is still a game fans of the C&C games will enjoy diving into, just do not expect much and you will be fine.

Gameplay
I am not sure why Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 Uprising is such a step down compared to the original Red Alert 3 game but it feels like this game was almost thrown together of missions and ideas which were removed from the main game and then put together for Uprising. Story wise almost the entire game boring and is very frustrating at times to the point of making you reset your PC because the unbalanced artificial intelligence and the odd completely unbalanced map.

Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 Uprising does not do anything new or innovative from its original counterpart and it did not need to in my opinion, just as long as it kept the same level of quality across the board. Co-operative gameplay was removed and this is boggling my brain because this was such a fun part of the original game and multiplayer was removed making me wonder how far down the multiplayer has dropped in the Command and Conquer series since the stellar Kanes Wrath.

I have to say that because of the unbalanced single player game and lack of any multiplayer gameplay this is one of the most disappointing games in a long time I had many expectations for this game and now feel completely let down. If you are new to real time strategy gaming and looking for a great Command and Conquer to play do yourself a favor and get C&C Tiberium Wars and C&C Kanes Wrath you will not go wrong with those two amazing games.

Graphics
Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 was a major step up graphically for the standard Real Time Strategy games when it was released last year and still is one of the rare RTS games to stand out with its graphics art style. Red Alert 3 Uprising follows the same graphics style (obviously) and does not attempt to try anything new, but still looks very good in the end.

Mission level design is one aspect to real time strategy games which usually leaves me wanting more but beyond a few frustrating missions most of the missions are designed well for a single player campaign. Most are linear but in the end after you have defeated the mission the quality does show through. It is just too sad that there is no multiplayer support this time around as multiplayer would add much to the map and if the same level of quality of the single player maps were translated to the multiplayer maps the game would have been better.

The game contains plenty of full motion video segments which are of the same high quality we have come to enjoy in the previous Command and Conquer games. Plenty of notable (but maybe not nameable) Hollywood talent who make up the actors who play the various Generals and soldiers of the game and each one is great in their role. The actors include Malcolm McDowell and Ric Flair (WWF Fame) and several others who make watching the game fun.

Audio
Of course it is no surprise that the audio in the expansion is just as good as the original Red Alert 3. The audio team would have had to fall asleep to mess up the audio this time around and everything fits just like it did in the previous game. The new voice acting is of course just as cheesy and done perfectly as the other Command and Conquer games and I love it. You cannot go wrong with voice acting like this, it’s not Shakespeare and they know it so it works from beginning to end.

Value
With no multiplayer support this time around and the poorly balanced single player side of things I have to give the value a low mark and hope a future patch makes the expansion more of a value for the average gamer. Only C&C fans will find this expansion something to enjoy.

Bottom Line
I have to say that I was hoping that Uprising would have been the third Real Time Strategy game which I could absolutely love this year but it has left a bitter taste in my mouth. This is an expansion only for those who are die hard Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 fans who are looking for more single player fun but do not expect the same level of quality as the original Red Alert 3 had.

Pros
+ Great graphics and audio
+ Love the cheesy full motion video
+ Its Command and Conquer
+ Some very fun and well designed missions…
Cons
- … followed by some unbalanced and very frustrating and overly difficult missions
- No multiplayer mode?
- Wildly unbalanced single player
- What happened? the first Red Alert 3 was amazing and this one is a step back
