(WiiWare) Swords & Soldiers Review
Swords & Soldiers

Swords & Soldiers is 100 percent completely historical inaccurate and that is fine with me since this genre bending 2D Real Time Strategy game is 100 percent fun. Adding some interesting campaign story lines spread across three campaigns, multiplayer, challenges and more this downloadable Wii-ware title is a welcome surprise to those gamers who are looking for a bit of strategy at a low price should look no further.

Taking a long lived gaming staple genre such as Real Time Strategy which has literally been done to death for decades of gaming has evolved the genre from the standard 3D to 2D. During most of the missions you will create miners, ranged units, warriors and other units along with researching different powers and abilities such as healing and throwing lightning bolts towards the enemy. Using the Wii-mote, much like a PC mouse, you can select which units to buy or abilities to use and then where you use them. Everything is fairly fast and the actual units take care of the rest by moving across the screen.
There are many different goals which include destroying the enemy completely to mining a set amount of gold. It is important to keep track of your goal because the game moves very fast and while you can slow it down there is a good reason to keep the games speed set to normal so you can earn some in game achievements.
There is many different game modes for you to enjoy from the 30 missions spread across the 3 main campaigns, multiplayer, skirmish and challenge modes. These modes add a lot of gaming value for such a low priced game. Multiplayer is completely local which is a shame but it is a well done feature and is a good reason to own a second Wii-mote.
As I mentioned before the game moves fast and sometimes might feel like it is moving much too fast but a simple change in tactics can change the entire tide of a battle just like a normal real time strategy title which is a welcome feature to say the least.

Overall, the graphics for the game Swords & Soldiers has a nice cartoonish graphical look to it which is pleasant on the eyes. All of the animations, effects and the like are well done and fit with the campaign and the overall game design. The games menu system for the most part are well done but no matter how much I played the game I was always left feeling like it could have or should have been better. From entering your name to selecting perks to buy they just seem too small to quickly select and move on.
Audio wise the game does everything right in its overall design with fun music and light hearted sound effects and does not mire the game down with bad or useless audio. In fact if Swords & Soldiers audio is a bright spot out of a slew of many downloadable games on all platforms with average sound design.

Swords & Soldiers has three distinct campaigns single player wise and multiplayer along with some extra gameplay choices on top of everything else this game has some immense value.
Bottom Line2D side scrolling real time strategy game is a rare game indeed, but Swords & Soldiers proves that a well designed game can work. Besides the odd minor issue with controls and the kid game feel of Swords & Soldiers this is one game I would recommend buying for strategy fans looking for something new.
