Marvel + Capcom + Vita = Best Portable Fighting Game Ever?

Bringing a fighting game to the Vita could have been a disaster. Handhelds are typically not suited for the fighting genre. Concessions often have to be made in order to replicate the controls on the smaller system. Thankfully, the Vita version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 shows that this handheld is much different than everything that has come before it. Virtually a pixel-perfect port of the console version of the game, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 on the Vita is exactly the (portable) game fighting fans have been waiting for.
With the Vita version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it’s almost as if Capcom zapped the game with a shrinking ray, and put it onto a tiny little cartridge. All of the game’s modes (Arcade, Mission, Heroes and Heralds, etc.) appear, and since the Vita has nearly as many buttons as a PS3 controller, no alterations were made to the controls. Anyone who has played the game before will find himself right at home when firing up a match for the first time. Newcomers may find it a bit challenging to execute combos perfectly at first, as it does take a little bit of time to get accustomed to the sensitivity of the Vita’s analog sticks. Of course, once that muscle memory of “half-circle forward, heavy attack” begins to take hold, the differences between a larger controller and the Vita soon fade.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a Vita game without some sort of touch-screen controls. The game’s Touch mode is an interesting detour into what not to do with a game. There’s absolutely no skill involved, as all you have to do is merely tap your opponent, and your chosen combatant will attack as fast as you can tap. It’s not necessarily a bad idea in concept, but the execution takes away some of the allure of the game. Since your finger is constantly covering the screen, you can’t see any of the action happening. The game’s visual presentation is one of its most impressive features, so disrupting it with rather pedestrian touch-screen controls doesn’t really do the game any favors. It is just another game mode, so you don’t have to spend any more or less time with it than you want.
Every character and costume in the console version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is present in the Vita version as well. Sadly, Jill and Shuma Gorath are still only available as DLC, but the roster and costumes remain otherwise unchanged. It’s pretty incredible just how great everything, from the stages to the hyper combos, looks on the Vita, and it’s definitely one of the selling points of the game. In a side-by-side comparison, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the two versions. Animations are fluid, even when playing online, and there’s no slowdown whatsoever when there are multiple characters on screen at once.
All of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s beloved 3-on-3 tag-team action makes the transition to the Vita, and the game truly looks and plays just like its console brethren. It can be a bit tough at times to execute your special moves precisely on the Vita’s analog sticks, but the game is an otherwise brilliant experience. But again, it is almost the exact same game as the console version. There isn’t a lot of incentive to pick it up unless it’s your first time, or you’re a die-hard fan who needs a fighting game fix on the go. That said, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 looks and plays great on the Vita. No matter what your reason for picking it up, you won’t be disappointed in the least.

Here we are. The next generation of consoles is among us and it is finally time to start thinking about finally unplugging our beloved current-gen systems. Could there be a better swan song for one of these systems than taking a trip back to Rapture?
Whether it’s a rainy day, a sickness, or some other reason not to go outside and enjoy the beautiful summer air, video games are the perfect way to spend your time - that is, if you can find a game to play. In terms of releases, summer generally isn’t the most fruitful of seasons, and this year is no different. So what games could/should you be sinking your teeth into during the dog days?
Since its reveal at E3 2009, The Last Guardian has not resurfaced other than in rumours and in statements regarding said rumours. Sony admits to major studio problems during the game’s development, but constantly reassures those anticipating the game that it is still not, and will not, be canceled. So is this the year that we finally see the resurrection of The Last Guardian? In my opinion, the answer is a big fat NO.
Getting my first mount in World of Warcraft was a major milestone. It came at a time before Blizzard reduced the cost of training for a ground mount and the gold required seemed like an impossible sum when quests were doling out a few coppers. What's more, I was foolishly selling my gathered iron or mithril to in-game vendors rather than placing it up for auction. I won't get into the particulars of my moneymaking strategy but I will say that it wasn't effective and very indicative of my n00b status.
